Back to School: Louisiana students will learn about financial literacy to graduate
School is back in session and high school students in Louisiana will begin to enroll in personal finance classes.
The finance class is now a required course after a law was passed in 2023.
State Rep. Nicholas Muscarello says Louisiana ranks last in the nation in financial literacy. Louisiana is now the 22nd state in the country to require personal finance classes to graduate.
According to Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley, the class of 2028 will be the first class that will need a personal finance class in order for students to receive their diplomas.
“They [students] are less likely to fall prey of those individuals that might try to take advantage of them after gradation. They are more likely to have a greater sense of knowledge around all the elements of financial institutions,” said Brumley.
The course will be taught by industry professionals such as representatives from Whitney Bank.
