Paradoxically, physical security companies are not free from being victims of cybercriminals either. Sometimes, hackers demonstrate that even they are not one hundred percent safe.

Brinks Home, an American company that offers home surveillance systems backed by an alarm center, reportedly suffered a ransomware attack by the infamous extortion group ShinyHunters, who have added it to their dark web leak page.

The cybercriminals obtained4.9 million records from the company’s Salesforce instance. Some of the records could include personally identifiable information (PII), although this has not been confirmed by the company.

Since the alarm brand decided not to pay the ransom, the well-known group decided to share 41 GB of data as punishment.

“We are aware that such material may be published. Brinks Home is working diligently to determine what information was involved and who may be affected,” the firm stated in a communication about the incident.

Maximum caution

The physical security company has committed to notifying potentially affected individuals and recommends its customers remain “vigilant against unsolicited emails, text messages, or phone calls requesting personal information or account credentials.”

Brinks assures that their alarm monitoring system and its operation have not been affected, as the attackers did not access their products or services.

This is not the first time ShinyHunters has focused on a target like this. In 2024, they carried out a couple of attacks against the American ADT, a century-old firm that was originally dedicated to the telegraph in 1874, although it also assured that customer alarm systems were not compromised.
