QUEENS, New York (WABC) –A ransomware attack that caused a network outage across the Queens Public Library system has disrupted services since Wednesday afternoon, library officials said.
While the outage remains ongoing, the library has restored free Wi-Fi access and check-out and return machines at all open locations. Officials said customers will not be charged late fines during the disruption.
Several services remain affected, including the Queens Public Library website, the QPL Mobile App, on-site computers, digital media services and book renewals.
In an update, Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott thanked patrons for their patience as the system continues to recover.
“First, I want to thank the public for their patience, understanding and support as we continue to respond to the ransomware attack earlier this week,” Walcott said. “Our team is heartened by the words of encouragement and appreciation for QPL that so many people have shared with us. We know how much our customers rely on the Library’s technology to access information, use our resources, and stay connected. Our dedicated staff are working hard to continue serving the public and ensure that our libraries remain welcoming places for all.”
Walcott said the library’s IT team has restored free Wi-Fi service at all open locations, and that check-out and return machines are operating at limited capacity.
Although the library’s website remains unavailable, visitors are being redirected to a temporary webpage that provides basic information and service updates. The library is also sharing updates through its social media channels.

According to Walcott, the outage continues to affect digital materials, the library’s mobile app, public computers and printers, and internal systems.
“We continue to work closely with our government partners and outside experts to investigate the attack and restore our systems as quickly as possible. We do not yet have a timeline, but we will keep the public informed,” he said.
The library said its locations remain open as scheduled as efforts continue to investigate the attack and restore affected systems.
