How long can an insurance company stall my claim?

I got hit off my motorcycle almost 3 months ago. I have 3 witness, pictures and the police report all in my favor. I got a lawyer and opened up a injury and property damage claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance (State Farm). The ins co initally accepted liability by email. Long story, short, the claims handler at State Farm is now saying that my claim is on hold pending an investigation involving the fact that the person who hit me was driving a taxi (it was some type of small, hispanic taxi company), and they didn’t have the proper coverage to be using their car for a taxi.

State Farm says they’re investigating whether or not they are going to cover anything. It’s been over 2 months and they’re still saying the same thing.

Anyone know if this is some type of industry, stall tactic that they can continue for an extended period of time? If so, is there any reasonable time frame my lawyer can insist on?

To me, it’s seems pretty cut and dry; either she had the proper coverage or didn’t and the insurance company is liable, based off that, or they aren’t. I don’t understand what they can possibly be investigating that takes more than 2 months and counting. Please advise, and thanks in advance.

And yes I understand that I can wait and have my lawyer handle it (which is what I’m doing), but I’m curious if anyone has any knowledge or experience with this particular situation…
